Critical Incident Management.
A Critical Incident can be defined as any situation in which a person experienced, witnessed, or was confronted with actual or threatened death or serious injury, or was confronted with a threat to the physical integrity of self or others. Examples of critical incidents may include; physical/sexual assault, threat to physical health, witnessing the traumatic death or injury of patients and/or members of staff, and where a patient and/or member of staff seriously harms himself/herself or others or commits suicide while in the employers care or employment. The person's response usually involves intense fear, helplessness, or horror after a critical incident.
OHSAS believes that critical incident management is a comprehensive, integrated multicomponent crisis intervention system. CAPS can provide organisational level advice, consultation and training in relation to Critical Incident Management. This may include ongoing support and intervention for individuals particularly affected by involvement in such an incident.
